Our Coloured Gemstones

Here you can learn more about the coloured gemstones we use in our jewelry.

Colours

Tourmalines

Tourmalines come in a range of colour tones, from green to blue to pink.

Our signature tourmalines range from deep green with blue undertones (as seen here) to deep forest green.

Hardness

Tourmalines

The Tourmaline has a hardness of 7-7,5 on Mohs Scale of Hardness (learn more here).

Origin

Tourmalines

Our signature green tourmalines are cut from raw Tourmaline rocks found in Nigeria and Afghanistan.

These places are together with Namibia and Brazil the four places where we find our most beautiful green tourmalines.

Wear & Tear - Durability

Tourmalines

The tourmaline is a durable gemstone than can be worn everyday and hold through generations, thanks to its hardness.

One of the best traits with tourmalines are their saturated, deep colour hues, which makes them stay beautiful also when you haven't cleaned your jewelry in a while. This is in contrast to e.g. morganites and white topazes, which needs cleaning every week if you wear them often, due to that dust and dirt easily dull their sparkle.

Where are your gemstones cut?

Our gemstones are usually cut in Sri Lanka (where we collaborate with a small family-owned gem cutting facility), in Hong Kong, Bangkok or in Sweden.

Where it is cut depends usually on three factors:

1) the complexity of the cut,

2) if we have sourced a raw rock and then cut it into many small gemstones at the same time, or

3) if we have got hold of a ready-cut, beautiful and unique gemstone.

Colours

Sapphires

Sapphires - the gemstone of the rainbow. The magic with sapphires lies in its high refractive index, which makes it sparkle more than any other coloured gemstone.

It also comes in all colours and hues you can imagine - except red. A red sapphire is called a ruby!

We are very proud to be able to offer small colour-calibrated, natural sapphires in a very wide range of colour hues - simply contact us!

Hardness

Sapphires

The sapphire has a hardness of 9 on Mohs Scale of Hardness, which makes it harder than all other coloured gemstones. This makes it exceptionally durable - in fact, it is the second most durable gemstone after diamonds.

Origin

Sapphires

Sapphires come from all over the world:

Our sea-green sapphires come from Madagascar and Tanzania.

Our olive green sapphires come
from Thailand and Kenya.

Our blue sapphires originate from Sri Lanka.

Our lavender and light yellow sapphires are found in Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Wear & Tear - Durability

Sapphires

Thanks to its hardness, sapphires have an excellent durability and will retain their beauty for many years.

It handles daily everyday wear very well, and can hold through generations.

Note that despite that the sapphire is very resistant to scratches, it can chip in the edges if it gets hit from the wrong angle.

One of the best traits with the sapphire is its high refractive index, which makes it stay sparkly also when worn and "dirty". Thus, it will usually be enough to wash your sapphire jewelry at home once per month. This is unlike e.g. morganites and white topazes, which needs cleaning every week if you wear them often, due to that the dust and dirt cover its sparkle and makes them dull.

What is a Gemstone?

Coloured gemstones are all gemstones that are not diamonds.

But what is the definition of a gemstone?

Can a stone you find on the street be a gemstone?

Colours

Morganite

Morganite - perhaps the most romantic gemstone of all.

It has a beautiful, dusty pink colour tone that ranges from cold light pink to warm champagne pink.

Hardness

Morganite

The morganite has a hardness of 7,5-8 on Moh's Scale of Hardness. Learn more about hardness here.

Origin

Morganite

Our signature Morganites are cut from raw Morganite rocks found in Mozambique and Nigeria.

Wear & Tear - Durability

Morganite

The morganite is a durable gemstone than can be worn everyday and hold through generations, thanks to its hardness.

The main disadvantage with the morganite is that dust and dirt from everyday wear may dull its sparkle and make the gemstone look matte. Therefore, to keep your jewelry beautiful, we recommend that you clean it weekly if you wear it daily.

This you can do at home easily: simply use dish soap, a tooth brush and hot water to wash away dirt and make your morganite sparkle again!

To qualify as a gemstone, a stone needs to fulfill the following four criterias:

1. It needs to be rare

2. It needs to be beautiful

3. It needs to be exceptionally hard

4. And it needs to be durable enough to be cut, polished and set in a piece of jewelry

The main reason that a pebble on the street is not a gemstone is simply because it is not rare enough!

The reason that a beautiful stone like marble (although somewhat rare) doesn't qualify as a gemstone is because it is not hard enough. Learn more about hardness here.

Colours

Aquamarine

The aquamarine comes from the same gemstone family as the morganite: beryll.

It comes in beautiful medium to light blue colour tones ranging from cold ice-blue to warm turquoise.

Hardness

Aquamarine

The aquamarine has a hardness of 7,5-8 on Moh's Scale of Hardness.

Learn more about hardness here.

Origin

Aquamarine

Our aquamarines are cut from raw aquamarine rocks found in Nigeria, Mozambique and Madagascar.

Wear & Tear - Durability

Aquamarine

The aquamarine is a durable gemstone than can be worn everyday and hold through generations, thanks to its hardness.

Thanks to its saturated blue tones, it looks beautiful even when you haven't washed it in a while. Often, it is enough to clean your aquamarine jewelry at home once per month!

Natural or not?

Many gemstones are irradiated to enhance their color - but we try to find those that have naturally acquired their wonderful color.

Colours

Topaz

Topaz is often found colourless ("white") in nature even if natural blue topazes exists.

The blue topazes which you might have seen in jewelry are almost always inferior quality colourless topazes that are irradiated to become blue!

Hardness

Topaz

The topaz has a hardness of 8 on Moh's Scale of Hardness. Learn more about hardness here.

Origin

Topaz

Our colourless topazes are cut from raw rocks found in Nigeria.

Wear & Tear - Durability

Topaz

The topaz is a durable gemstone thanks to its hardness, although it can be more prone to chipping (get chipped in the edges) than other hard gemstones.

The main disadvantage with the topaz is the same as for morganites - dust and dirt from everyday wear may dull its sparkle and make the gemstone look matte. Therefore, to keep your topaz jewelry beautiful, we recommend that you clean it weekly if you wear it daily.

This you can do at home easily: simply use dish soap, a tooth brush and hot water to wash away dirt and make your gemstone sparkle again!

How are coloured gemstones graded?

Quality assessment of coloured stones:

Coloured gemstones have not yet been awarded a worldwide, standardized quality system such as
The four C's of Diamonds.

Coloured gemstones are therefore assessed one by one as we source each stone. Selecting each stone individually makes sourcing coloured gemstones a meticulous work.

  1. First and foremost, we look at its colour. Is it strong and saturated, or eviscerated and milk-and-water-ish?
  2. Secondly, we look at the cut, and particularly its sparkle. Is it glimmering or dull?
  3. After that, we look at the clarity. Often, you have to accept some inclusions, if you fall in love with a stone's colour and sparkle. Its inclusions are anyway what makes the stone truly personal, we think!
